Czech and Slovak Club in London (23906 bytes)

Curious about Czech food and Slovak food? You can enjoy it in London at the Czech and Slovak Club...

Located in West Hampstead, London NW6, the Czech and Slovak Club (officially called the Czechoslovak National House), a meeting place of Czech and Slovak nationals living in or visiting London, extends a warm welcome to all who want to experience the atmosphere of a Czech bar and restaurant and sample Czech and Slovak cuisine and beverages without having to cross the English Channel.

Called in one newspaper "London's premier dumpling establishment", it is usually full of Czechs and Slovaks made happy by a combination of good beer and Europe's finest dumplings. However, do not let the word "dumpling" deter you, the Czech dumpling does not even resemble what the English word normally describes. To appreciate the light and self indulgent Czech dumpling, you simply have to taste it.

The Club has a bar area where visitors can sit and chat over a drink of their choice, including Czech beer and a selection of wines and spirits, before dining, if they wish to do so, in the Club's restaurant. Decorated in flock wallpaper, the restaurant's atmosphere is informal.

The restaurant's menu includes a selection of Czech and Slovak dishes such as pork with sauerkraut and dumplings, meatloaf - yes, you have guessed it - with sauerkraut and dumplings, svickova, roast duck, goulash and Wiener schnitzel. However, the best treat is, probably, the sweets. The choice includes pancakes, apple strudel or apricot dumplings, the restaurant's speciality: when they arrive the apricot dumplings sit lordly on the plate, lapping at their edges a small amount of melted butter while on their top lies an enticing crust of sugar.

The Czech and Slovak Club is a uniquely delightful place, the perfect antidote to the modern West End eateries and the prices are implausibly low. It is usually necessary to book a table, especially if you wish to visit at the weekend.

We look forward to your visit
